![]() Painter and pastelist Tom Mitts is a Newport artist whose work concentrates on nocturnal landscape imagery. His award winning works are in numerous private and corporate collections, and his work has been published locally and nationally. Mr. Mitts is a graduate of Centre College of Kentucky and holds his MFA from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He has been an artist in residence at the Glassell School with the Museum of Fine Art in Houston. Mr.Mitts is an active member of the Cincinnati Art Club and a former director of the Attic Gallery in Newport. Tom explores the effects of light and night creating a chiaroscuro of color. The richly layered scenes he creates glow, they conjure radiance and their aura cast a veil of mystery. Sometimes quiescent, sometimes ominous, the silent light of night sets the mood as it illuminates surfaces or lingers in heavy air. The artist seeks to find the extraordinary within the seemingly ordinary. His images are compelling and complex, they are realistic and expressive, usual and unusual, modern and traditional. In searching for meaning that lurks in darkness, Mr. Mitts sheds light to find order and beauty. Tom's work has recently been selected by the Kentucky Arts Council for the Kentucky Visions: 2001 exhibition in the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort, KY.And, check out a review of his last exhibition courtesy of CincyRing. |
